The sumptuous resplendence of Dresden shines through in the festive choral works by Jan Dismas Zelenka recorded on the GENUIN classics label by the Marburger Bachchor and L’arpa festante with Nicolo Sokoli conducting. A Magnificat, Christmas Mass and Dixit Dominus setting are featured in the new release. From the highly expressive music, the warm sound of the chorus, the nuanced orchestral accompaniment, the noble singing of the soloists and the convincing overall effect of the recording, there is something appealing to any listener. There is no disputing the high level achieved in this production and the attractiveness of the repertoire – which together will make listeners eager to hear more from these musicians. - Genuin

"This disc of key sacred works is welcome and the outstanding quality of Zelenka´s music apparent from the outset is matched by the period instruments of L´arpa festante and the soloists under Nicolo Sokoli." - Matthew Power, Choir & Organ Magazine, March/April 2012 Read less
Amazing and Articulate!!!July 12, 2012By Clifford H C. (Thompson, MB)See All My Reviews"Jan Dismas Zelenka: Magnificat; Missa Nativitatis Domini; Dixit Dominus Amazing and Articulate!!! This is a very worthwhile disk for Baroque Music Lovers. But first a word about the performances... These soloists Katia Plaschka, Anne Bierwirth, Christian Dietz and Markus Flaid do an absolutely remarkable job with not a weak voice in the mix. The Choir Marburger Bachchor is amazingly polished and articulate. The instrumentalists are also top notch.... This is not music for musical weaklings. Zelenka is out to impress with music that is full of virtuosity and difficult parts. Everyone in this production is so professional, polished and practised. Its these amazing performances that make Zelenka absolutely shine. Now the music and you will not be disappointed. Really remarkable and innovative musical forms that Zelenka produces and discards only to be replaced by more elaborate forms. The Dixit Dominus shines as an example of this complex harmonics and amazing textures. The Amen is complex, innovative and uplifting moving constantly upward towards the heavens. All of these pieces are remarkably uplifting. This recording is well worth the money and time and should be listened to by everyone possibly interested in Baroque Dresden."Report Abuse
