Notes and Editorial Reviews

Henri Rabaud is back in the spotlight with this release. The Night Procession is the most recorded piece, but beside it there is very little in the past catalog, a lack of interest in a composer who actually took his place among the French romantics, such as Saint-Seans and Chausson. The Second Symphony, composed while a resident at the Villa Medici in Rome shows the influence of Franck and Saint-Saens but also displays a beautiful new personality in the way the young composer develops themes. This is a symphony which deserves a place within the circle of the great French symphonists, Gounod, Saint-Saëns, Lalo, Franck, Chausson, Dukas. The recording is also a first for the talented young French conductor Nicolas Couton, a regular Read more conductor of the Sofia Philharmonic. Bringing to light this unknown Romantic symphony is surely an appropriate project. - Timpani (Translated from French)

PRESS:
"Rabaud's music could not get better tribute...inspired." - Carl Fischer. classiquenews.com, December 17, 2012

"... it is with the Second Symphony of a work [composed] before 1900, therefore in relative youth, whose mastery of writing is impressive, accompanied by two works that succeed directly to the composer'e catalog, forming a program of remarkable consistency. We can thank the conductor, Nicolas Couton, who contributed to this risk-taking Timpani project, that this recording is in all respects spectacular. A project which offers a more accurate picture of developments in the symphony within the French school at the dawn of the twentieth century." - Audin Fred, classicinfo.com, November 19, 2012 Translated from French)

"...I would recommend to you without hesitation this superb disc devoted to Henri Rabaud that will delight fans of French symphonic music by allowing them to discover or rediscover a composer too infrequently heard...we sincerely hope to experience Nicolas Couton in other unknown music. - Pucek Jean-Christophe.
