Notes and Editorial Reviews

All of the music on this recording is no more than seven years old and much of it was written for the Sydney Chamber Choir. The pieces explore issues of time and place, history and geography, on paths which extend into distant areas of our culture. They also explore the subtle ways in which language may mediate or, more particularly, set up dislocations between them. Interestingly, this focus on language in each of these four pieces produces one similar result: speech precipitates out of singing in all of them. Stephen Adam's Memory Pieces, like Geography Songs, sets a poem written in Australia in the recent past: Ania Walwicz' Memory. This is a stream of consciousness prose poem, in the manner of Molly Bloom's at the end of Joyce's Read more Ulysses, which attempts to make some sense of several experiences whose time-frame has become inextricably jumbled in the mind of the poet. Adams' setting gives it punctuation, rhetoric, highlights, and at times does what a sequence of words can never do: it superposes texts to be sung simultaneously. Both the remaining pieces, Logos and Sicut Lilium, take fragments of texts from the distant past (Old and New Testaments, Apocrypha) and set these to music in ways which disrupt the idea that the words mean something, in the narrow sense. Both pieces rail against what Goethe would have called the Unzulanglichkeit (insufficiency, inadequacy) of the capacity of words to mean. Read less
