James Yannatos is a long-time member of the Harvard Music faculty, and has served as director of the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra starting in 1964. On this disc, two of his works are sandwiched around one by Harvard's most famous pedagogue, Walter Piston. Piston's Third Symphony is a strong example of his art, which, like New England architecture, claims an American identity through pure and often austere application of classical techniques without reference to folk or popular materials.
