Notes and Editorial Reviews

Leopold Godowsky was one of the greatest piano virtuosos of his time, many of whose compositions for the piano have long since taken their place in the repertoire. However, his violin music is almost unknown. Avowal is a charming transcription of his piano work Poem No 2. The Twelve Impressions were dedicated to Fritz Kreisler and his wife, and are largely derived from Godowsky’s original piano pieces but refashioned to allow for Kreisler’s fingerings and bowing.  Elegant Recital June 7, 2014 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Known more for his compositions for solo piano, Leopold Godowsky also composed a number of pieces adaptable for violin and piano. On this very excellent Naxos CD, violinist Nazrin Rashidova and pianist Robert Chadwick present several of these works in a program sure to find favor with anyone who enjoys small scale chamber music. The selections on this recording impressed me with their Central and Eastern European character, with flashes of nostalgia, introspection, and intense melody throughout. There is an occasional use of slight dissonance in some passages, just enough to add another effective nuance and enhancing the overall impact of Godowski's musical message. I found the artistic merit of this recording to be very high, made even more attractive by Naxos' top notch sonic qualities. All in all, a fine recording, one that deserves a serious listen. Recommended." Report Abuse
