Notes and Editorial Reviews

“Daugherty is one of the most colorful and widely performed American concert music composers of his generation.”

Fire and Blood (2003), a concerto for violin and orchestra, was commissioned by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The world premiere was given by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Neeme Jarvi, with Ida Kavafian, solo violin, at Symphony Hall, Detroit, Michigan on May 3, 2003. It is a piece inspired by Mexican artist Diego Rivera's extraordinary "Detroit Industry" murals. It was Rivera himself who predicted the possibility of turning his murals into music, after returning from a tour of the Ford factories: "In my ears, I heard the wonderful symphony which came from his factories where

Flamingo (1991)derives its title from the familiar pink plastic flamingo, found on the manicured front lawns of suburban America. “I remember noticing these plastic lawn ornaments for the first time when my family drove in a station wagon from Iowa to Florida in 1962.” Flamingo resonates with the flamenco dance, as it features two percussionists who perform various techniques such as striking, shaking, rattling, and thumb rolling the tambourine

Ladder to the Moon for solo violin, wind octet, double bass, and percussion was commissioned by the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society. The first performance was given by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center with Ida Kavafian, solo violin, in New York City on May 5, 2006. Ladder to the Moon is inspired by the urban landscapes of American artist Georgia O’Keeffe
