PALESTRINA Cantica Salomonis— excerpts . Vestiva i colli MONTEVERDI Messa a quattro voci (1640) Il Canto DUX 0910 (56:47 Text and Translation)

Usually titled Canticum Canticorum , this disc bears a title close to another release in the last issue ( Read more style="font-style:italic">Fanfare 37:3). Palestrina’s complete set of 29 motets drawn from the Old Testament book (half the text is set altogether) is limited in this ensemble’s concert performances to the 20 motets that are scored for SATTB, since the group of five singers cannot cope with other five-voice scorings. Even so, only 14 are included here (as it happens, none of the three in Harry Christophers’s disc reviewed herewith is included). They might have been coupled with Monteverdi’s Missa In illo tempore of 1610, which looks back to Palestrina’s style. But the second work is a contrasting Mass written in the stile nuovo for San Marco between 1613 and 1632, the period of his activity as maestro there, and published in the 1640 collection. Il Canto is a five-voice mixed ensemble with bass Michal Straszewski as artistic leader.

This is a very proficient team of singers that gives admirable renditions. The coupling is unusual but not a problem. I would rather hear the complete Palestrina collection, but this much is nicely done. The sound is close and bright; only fine voices can stand that kind of exposure. The Palestrina was part of a live concert (not at all evident) in 2012; the Mass was made three years earlier. Lovely.
