"...A professor of music at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, NY, Landrum has made something of a specialty of the nocturne. Of the many approaches to the form featured here, a few are highly tumultuous. Take Tcherepnin’s Nocturne Op. 2 No. 1, whose middle section consists almost exclusively of

crashing octaves and sixths or sevenths, and whose outer sections are dark and foreboding. Or consider Tchaikovsky’s Nocturne in C-sharp minor, with its challenging final section. Or Bizet’s Nocturne, which builds drama like an operatic potboiler. Others here are gems of dreamy, fleeting emotions..." - WQXR Read less

NO. LISTEN TO THE SAMPLES FIRST !! January 11, 2013
By S. PEARSON (SAN FRANCISCO, CA) See All My Reviews
"I HEARD ONE OF THESE PIECES ON THE CLASSIC RADIO STATION; I WAS ENTHRALLED! I FLEW IMMEDIATELY TO THE WHOLE CD, AND BOUGHT THE MP3. HOWEVER...AS I BEGAN HEARING MORE ... I WAS DEEPLY DISMAYED ! SUCH GORGEOUS PIECES... BUT PLAYED SOO BADLY. HERE'S WHY: HIS FINGERS SOUNDED WOODEN. I DID NOT HEAR THE FLOW OF MUSIC...BUT RATHER HEARD A SERIES OF NOTES. IT SOUNDED AS THOUGH LANDRUM WERE PLAYING THESE FOR THE FIRST TIME... FINDING HIS WAY THROUGH THE PIECE, BUT NOT REALIZING THE SEQUENTIAL FLOW OF INTEGRATED MUSIC. I RARELY REVIEW ANYTHING. IT'S A GREAT RESPONSIBILITY, I BELIEVE. BUT I AM COMPELLED TO FOREWARN: LISTEN TO THE SAMPLES FIRST, BEFORE YOU BUY THE WHOLE THING. I COULD NOT GET PAST MORE THAN ABOUT 5 OR 6 PIECES...IT WAS TOO PAINFUL. I GAVE THIS ONE STAR FOR THE LOVELY SELECTIONS HE CHOSE. IF ONLY THESE WERE PERFORMED BY LORTIE, THIBAUDET, OHLSSOHN, (spelling?) SHELLEY, OH THERE ARE MANY..WHO COULD'VE MADE THIS THE DIVINE COLLECTION I'D HOPED FOR !"
