Notes and Editorial Reviews

This set compiles a selection of electronic music created by computerized/electronic systems working in tandem with "organic" sources (live musicians, pre-existing recorded dialogue, etc.). Insook Choi's 'The Frog in a Machine' is a dark, cavernous journey to the heart of The Machine. Jean-Claude Risset's 'Saxtractor' is a piece for solo saxophone and taped sounds - its probing, free-form yet lyrical qualities recall the jazz avant-garde of the 1970s (especially the work of Stockhausen-inspired Anthony Braxton in his collaborations with Richard Teitelbaum). Jerry Tabor's 'Engaging Causey' is a disorienting yet strangely enchanting collage of sounds, seemingly "improvised" by computer. This is not "easy listening," but those interested in Read more the vast possibilities of electronically generated sound will be fascinated. Read less
