Notes and Editorial Reviews

With each of the works on AMERICAN ICONS, composer Michael Daugherty draws an element of American pop culture into the concert hall. Some--Elvis and Liberace--are explicitly musical, while others--such as Barbie and auto assembly lines--lend themselves to musical treatment quite well.
Daugherty's aim throughout is to create concert works which draw on experiences and emotions which are familiar to his audience--moving away from the ponderous abstracts of pure orchestral music. Thus, 'Dead Elvis' features an Elvis-impersonating bassoon soloist and 'What's that Spell?' is a "pop cantata for two Barbie-sopranos." This emphasis on humor and accessibility should not, however, be taken to mean that Daugherty's works are lacking in
Read more compositional rigor. Each work on AMERICAN ICONS was commissioned by a leading contemporary music ensemble and presents considerable challenges to performers.
All but one of the performances here are by the London Sinfonietta, well-known for its excellent performances of music of the 20th century. 'What's that Spell?' is given a deliciously evocative performance by its commissioners, Dogs of Desire, the contemporary music ensemble of the Albany Symphony. Daugherty's music and his manner of drawing on pop culture are engaging and funny, and certainly unique. Read less
