RECORDERS GREATE AND SMALE Mezzaluna RAMÉE RAM0907 (66:09)

Works by ANON., ARCADELT, A. BASSANO, BYRD, DE FÉVIN, FERRABOSCO, FERRETTI, HENRY VIII, ISAAC, LASSUS, MARENZIO, RUFFO, VAN WILDER, VERDELOT, WILLAERT

The title for this album comes from an inventory of the royal household of King Henry VIII upon his death in 1547, which noted some 76 “recorders greate and smale,” including a matched set reserved for “the King’s Majesty’s own use.” Read more Henry’s enthusiasm for the instrument even extended to successfully inducing five brothers of the Bassano clan, a celebrated group of Venetian instrument makers and performers, to emigrate to England in 1540 and ply their trades under his patronage, with an Italian influence gradually displacing the previously dominant Flemish one at the court as a result. A sixth Bassano family member followed in 1550, a significant number since a six-member ensemble was considered to be a distinguishing mark of royalty, and also was necessary to perform many compositions of the era (often transcribed motets and madrigals) written in six parts. The works featured on this disc are drawn from a variety of sources, including a c.1520 codex known as Henry VIII’s Manuscript , the late 16th-century Fitzwilliam Wind Manuscript , and various Flemish, French, and Italian codices and printed sources.

I am deeply fond of music for ensembles of recorders (and also of viol consorts), and this debut disc by the seven-member ensemble Mezzaluna, formed in 2003, should be snapped up immediately by anyone who shares that enthusiasm. Not even the Loeki Stardust Quartet of Amsterdam ever achieved the stunningly pure beauty and homogeneity of perfectly blended sound, breathless flowing legato, and variety of dynamic shading demonstrated by this group. Aside from continuing scholarly advances in the understanding and application of techniques of early-music performance, this is also surely due in part to the ensemble performing on two matched sets of instruments from a single modern maker, Adrian Brown, designed after originals now held in the Vienna Art History Museum. One set, marked “HIERS.” (or alternately “HIE.S”) for “Hieronymus,” is believed to be from a German (probably Saxon) workshop of the early 16th century. The second set, marked “!!” (thought to represent either a rabbit’s foot or ears, or else a silkworm moth) is linked to the Bassano clan, though whether its provenance is from the London or Venetian branches is unknown. The ensemble is closely but not oppressively miked; the digipak comes with exceptionally informative booklet notes and a great top-down photo of the members with their instruments, including a great bass recorder at least six feet tall. Renaissance instrumental ensemble music simply doesn’t get any better than this; urgently recommended.
