Notes and Editorial Reviews

The program of this recording is based on both "art" and "folkloristic" dance music. Frequent performances by the Merlin Ensemble of the works recorded here have led to an increasing awareness of the influence that dance music in its various forms has had on the music of Beethoven. The historical and biographical connections between the different composers during this period are also evident. Anton Diabelli (immortalized by Beethoven's variations on one of his themes) was also a patron of Franz Schubert, whose musical influence is also apparent in the Carnival Waltzes. The decisive influence of Beethoven and Schubert on the young Strauss is common knowledge. Strauss introduced the Viennese dance tradition to the rest of Europe. His sons, Read more Johann II and Josef (whose works were published by Diabelli's publishing house), went on to refine this art form, which reached its peak in their compositions. The Merlin Ensemble of Vienna was founded in 1991 by members of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Camerata Academica Salzburg. The core formation - five strings and three winds allows the group to perform not only the well-known works for this combination of instruments, but also to develop exciting special projects with all kinds of other artists.
