Notes and Editorial Reviews

Joel Cohen’s projects for Erato weren’t just exercises in early-music performance; there was a serious underlying point of view that permeated every project, whether his splendid traversal of Shaker hymns or this exploration of a handful of selections from the famous Cantigas de Santa Maria. Setting this project—originally released in 1988—apart from virtually every other recorded compilation of music drawn from this collection of 400 sacred songs to the Virgin Mary—“the most important examples of vernacular song from the Middle Ages; the summit of medieval Christian spirituality”—is Cohen’s insistence that a true realization of these songs should reflect the Judaic and North African Muslim influences that would have been an integral part Read more of Alfonso’s Spanish court.

So, after a careful analysis of the tunes and their stylistic characteristics, and noticing remarkable congruities with both the musical modes and indigenous instruments still common to northern Africa, Cohen combined the forces of his group with the Morocco-based ensemble Abdelkrim Rais Andalusian Orchestra of Fès. Some listeners will say that Cohen took this connection a bit too far—most of the songs sound more Arabic than Spanish—but the fundamental argument is both musically viable and musicologically defensible. And in the end, this is a very compelling rendering of some intriguing and delightfully mysterious music, by musicians who really care about its honest preservation.
