John de Lancie, born in Berkeley, California on July 26th, 1921, entered the Curtis Institute at the age of 14 to study with Marcel Tabuteau. After playing Solo Oboe in Philadelphia's Robinhood Dell and the Pittsburgh Symphony under Fritz Reiner, he served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 in North Africa, England, France and Germany. It was during this time that de Lancie visited the composer Richard Strauss in his home at Garmisch. "I felt a very respectful awe of this man, and I was convinced that I would not be able to contribute anything to the conversations which would be of interest to the composer. As I was well acquainted with his Horn Concerto, I then asked him if he had ever considered writing a concerto for oboe, but his only answer was a simple `no'." But the seed was evidently sown. Only a few months later - in October 1945 - Strauss completed the Oboe Concerto and noted on the title page, "Oboe Concerto 1945 inspired by an American soldier (oboist from Chicago)." At the time, Strauss seems to have forgotten the name of the American oboist and the fact that he was a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony. After the War, de Lancie joined the Philadelphia Orchestra as Associate Solo Oboist and in 1954 became principal oboist, a post he held until 1977, when he became director of the Curtis Institute for the next eight years. John de Lancie recorded over 2000 works as the Philadelphia Orchestra's Principal Oboist and forty different compositions with the Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet. Mr. DeLancie died earlier this year.
