Notes and Editorial Reviews

This release offers a nostalgic look over the shoulder at the great hotel salon music of the 1920s and 30s, as played through Central Europe. The special valor of the disc is that it has been assembled with all the care one expects when encountering a reconstructed Baroque opera. The jumping-off point is the artistry of Georges Boulanger (1893-1958), the premiere Romanian-gypsy violinist between the World Wars. (Actually, of course, it was one World War in two acts, separated by a twenty-year intermission.) Boulanger (his real family name was Pantazi) was no clod, but a genuine superstar of fantastic musicianship.

Born in Tulcea, Romania, Boulanger prepared for a concert career, including studies in Russia with the fabled
Read more Leopold Auer—the man who turned down the Tchaikovsky violin concerto as unplayable. As his few recordings available show, the man had a fabulous technique, plus a spellbinding feel for the phrase and pulse of a line. He toured widely, appeared in films, and maintained a wildly popular weekly radio show in Germany, largely unknown in the United States, Boulanger was as popular through Central Europe as Bing Crosby or Guy Lombardo here. Several of his compositions became major popular hits—especially Da Capo and Avant de mourir, both included in this collection.

With high musicological instincts, this disc tracked down fourteen of the original sets of parts in manuscript. Another eight were reconstructed from bits of music and old recordings by the Prima Carezza group—twenty-two pieces in all. . . which is why listing them all in detail seems a waste. Eight of Boulander's compositions are included, plus a bevy of standards such as Otchi Tehornia, Kalman's Komm, Zigany!, Jacob Gade's Jealousie, Rodriguez's La Cumparsita, and the like—the basic chestnuts.

The performance levels and recording are a sensation, headed by the sterling bow of violinist Primas Milton J. Kazinczy. The total ensemble includes violins, cello, string bass, clarinet, piano, banjo, harmonium, accordion, percussion, bird song effects, and special effects (Spezialeffekte). For what it offers, there is nothing better available, for the Swiss recording is outstanding as well as the music and performance. If you find you can resist it, try again while sipping a small snifter of blackberry cordial and munching a slab of Spanische Windtorte. Or, if you're on a diet, it might be worth uncorking a bottle of Echezeaux—even a modest vintage will d,- You should live a little, no? (And to hell with being P.C.!)
