"The bad news for lovers of the often quite original music of Mehul is these works are not performed in their original orchestral garb but are played by an ensemble of ten wind instruments. The good news is that "Les Jacobins" do extraordinarily well. The acid test is their performance of "Le Chasse de Jeune Henri Overture". "Le Chasse" with its lovingly detailed scenes of the early morning countryside could arguably be called the "first piece of impressionistic music". "Le Chasse" ends with a chase that, properly played, is hair-raising and it would seem that no group of ten instruments could possibly equal its orchestral equivalent. Not so. "Les Jacobins" lovingly and easily matches the orchestral dewy morning in its freshness and when the chase comes they momentarily seem undervalued. But when the french horns start playing with their bells up they are more exciting even than most orchestral performances. The disc includes five more overtures, two of them new to me, and 6 of his patriotic occasional pieces, most of them new to me. All of them beautifully played. Ben Cutler"
