Notes and Editorial Reviews

More proof that there's something about Mary? This is a collection of pieces that celebrates the Mary of biblical fame, except for a few songs that are just about girls named Mary or Maria, including the Mary who had a little lamb and the Maria who loved Tony in 'West Side Story.' There seems to be no particularly compelling logic, literary or musical, for their inclusion; and the reasoning in the liner notes that the "Ave" in Bernstein's "Maria" is "in parentheses" is not convincing. But the disc presents a nice collection of tunes, most of which are sacred hymns to the Virgin Mary. There are familiar classical examples such as the "Ave Maria" settings of Schubert and Gounod-after-Bach, and Mozart is represented, surprisingly, not by his Read more 'Ave Verum Corpus' but the comparatively "un-Mary'd" Alleluia from 'Exultate Jubilate.' There is a truly lovely modern "Ave Maria" by Franz Biebl sung by the men of Chanticleer; and Giulio Caccini's pop version, made famous by Andrea Bocelli, is heard here sung by Sumi Jo. Read less
