Notes and Editorial Reviews

In its role of showcasing women in music, the Leonarda label has assembled a potpourri of compositions by or related to women between the 12th and 17th centuries. There's an historical lesson in the liner notes and lyrics, as well as a delightful view in miniature of the evolution of song and instrumental airs preceding the boom of the Baroque. Aside from the recently resurrected Hildegard of Bingen, whose 12th Century compositions bear the church's influence of plainsong, most of the women here are unknown, at least as composers. Anne Boleyn, more famous for having lost her head to Henry VIII, is represented by a song supposedly composed by her in the Tower, a precursor to the forms that would blossom under her daughter, Elizabeth Read more I.
Andrea Folan's youthful, sweet soprano is well-suited to Boleyn's and later dance-influenced English-language songs. Her broad knowledge of the repertoire is evidenced in her decoration of the melody line of a poem by the Countess of Dia from 12th Century southern France; there are suggestions of Ladino and later Spanish stylings. The accompaniments and non-vocal numbers are performed gently but confidently on period instruments, including lute, recorder, and symphonia. Read less
