Composer and 2007 National Medal of Arts recipient Morten Lauridsen plays piano on this CD and proclaims the album a “superb recording of my choral music and art songs...all brilliantly performed by Voce and the Voce Chamber Artists."
"...Performances are absolutely stunning. Voce sings with tender warmth, exquisite nuance, and endearing spirit. They’ve got everything it takes (and more) to perform Lauridsen to perfection: the kind of clear vocal textures, pinpoint intonation, and dead-on accuracy that make his subtle rhythmic and harmonic designs bloom... It’s absolutely essential listening for any Lauridsen fan who wants to get to know his entire expressive palette." -- American Record Guide
Composer Morten Lauridsen, recipient of the 2007 National Medal of Arts (the highest award given to artists by the United States government) and NEA-designated "American Choral Master," has secured his place in music history as one of America’s greatest vocal composers. A life-long student of the human voice, Lauridsen's music presents a vast array of colors and dimensions. This album explores those many dimensions as well as his personal evolution in the vocal genre. His distinct voice has inspired a generation of choirs and composers. That inspiration has evoked new horizons of choral composition and choral singing. In this way, Lauridsen stands out among many. Not only has he advanced American vocal music throughout the world, history will credit Morten Lauridsen with expanding harmony - for and with the human voice.
Voce uses its voice to serve our community. At its core, Voce believes music finds its highest good in giving. Since its founding in 2006, Voce has served music and cherished the service music does for others. As music serves the community, so too does it serve artists, patrons of the arts and all those who love this art form. Voce creates harmony with charity and all who share a common commitment to the human voice and the human spirit. In keeping with this mission, fifty percent of the profits from the sale of this album will be shared with Habitat for Humanity.
Morten Lauridsen captures this spirit – with tenderness and with fire. His music has been performed and recorded by many outstanding ensembles. Voce and the Voce Chamber Artists are honored to share in this extraordinary experience.
On behalf of Morten Lauridsen, Voce, the Voce Chamber Artists and Habitat for Humanity, thank you and enjoy.

A Good SampleJune 10, 2015By Joseph Erdeljac (West Chester, PA)See All My Reviews"Although this recording is a good sampling of the composers choral output, the sound is not the best. The volume varies and the background ambient noise is sometimes very annoying. I love Lauridsen's compositions and the fact that he is at the keyboard, I must say the recording does not do the music justice."Report Abuse
Lauridsen beyond the works for chorusOctober 12, 2012By R. Willard (W. Simsbury, CT)See All My Reviews"'Sure on this Shining Night' is one of a kind. There are works from the Lauridsen opus you have never heard on any other recording. Works for clarinet, songs of protest, known works performed with different forces, pieces for chorus recorded for the first time. This recording is truly a treasure in the extensive Lauridsen discography. Six recording premiers in a program designed and performed in the composer presence and with him performing many of the compositions with VOCE. The group itself and its individual participants are a knockout. They show not fear, they are dead on pitch and most importantly don't just sing the music, they tell the story. I am a fan, join me and get this recording."Report Abuse
