Notes and Editorial Reviews

On Sir Arthur Sullivan's death, the Daily News obituarist wrote: "The death of no contemporary man of genius could have awakened a more general and personal regret than that of the great musician whom we lament today. He holds the same position in the musical history of the Victorian era as Gladstone, Tennyson and Darwin in its politics, poetry, and science. In no province of our national life in the past sixty years has there been a more marvelous development than in music. Sir Arthur Sullivan has been the chief pioneer in that renaissance, and the most prolific minister to its indulgence and delight...He has reached in his life-time perhaps a larger audience than any other artist who ever lived." Nowhere has Sullivan's fate been more Read more obvious than in his music for the Church, which (except for a few famous hymns) has sunk largely without trace. Yet Sullivan had imbibed the music of the church during his childhood, and the Church was to provide him with his earliest musical training and inspiration; and it was to stay with him throughout his life, despite the very different directions in which his career would turn. Here is an important release which presents an entirely different side to this wonderful composer. Read less
