Walter S. Hartley is a prolific composer, pianist and educator who was born in Washington, D.C. He attended the Eastman School where he studied with Burrill Phillips, Bernard Rogers and Howard Hanson. He has held faculty positions at Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia and at the State University of New York at Fredonia. Arthur Berger was born in New York City and his main composition teachers were Nadia Boulanger and Walter Piston at Harvard. He has held faculty positions at Mills College, Brooklyn College, the Juilliard School, Brandeis University, and the New England Conservatory. studied at an early age with Stefan Wolpe. He also studied at Yale with Paul Hindemith. He has written for Broadway productions and jazz groups as well as for the concert stage. Alvin Etler was a composer, oboist, author and educator. Born in Battle Creek, Iowa, he studied with Arthur Shepherd and Paul Hindemith. As an oboist he performed with the North American Woodwind Quartet and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He held faculty positions at Yale, Cornell, the University of Illinois, and Smith College. William Davis is the bassoonist in The University of Georgia Woodwind Quartet. His music recorded here was first performed on March 16, 2000 by the same performers who perform it here. Read less
