Notes and Editorial Reviews

Mieczyslaw Karlowicz dedicated his Serenade for Strings, Op. 2 to his violin professor, Urban, who conducted its premiere with the Berlin Philharmonic. The four movement serenade harks back to the salon music of a bygone world while displaying an attention to technical detail and glancing ahead to a new concept of harmony. The Concerto for String Orchestra by Grazyna Bacewicz is one of her most popular works. Bacewicz made her debut as a composer before the First World War, but her real breakthrough was not until after the War, as a composer with a sovereign command of neoclassicism. Romuald Twardowski studied with Boleslaw Woytowicz and Nadia Boulanger in Paris. His Old Polish Songs dabbles, with innocent humor, with the style of an era Read more past. The benign music, though not precisely set in any particular period, is characterized by a similar nostalgia to that of the Holberg Suite by Grieg. Mariusz Matuszewski is the youngest composer of the bunch and represents contemporary Polish trends. A theater composer, conductor and teacher at the Poznan Music Academy, he has mostly produced works for the theater, cinema and television, and ones of a religious nature. His Seven Pictures of Poland, 1999 won the second prize (there was no first) in the composition competition dedicated to Grazyna Bacewicz in 2000 that attracted 60 entries. Read less
