Notes and Editorial Reviews
ADAGIOS FOR AFTER HOURS is an excellent pick-me-up to listen to at home after a busy day at work. For some, it might be a great antidote to commuting or stress. There is something particularly soothing about French music, and the inclusion of works by Debussy, Satie, Ravel and Fauré not only represents their styles nicely but also creates a peaceful sonic landscape.
As the accompanying liner notes suggest, these pieces are suitable for meditation, or as a sleep aide, or for general relaxation. Perhaps most interesting is their possible use for meditation due to their tendency to assist visualization. The sounds of "Clair de Lune" and "En Bateau" suggest nighttime sounds and sounds that are quiet with a touch of sentimentality. "Reverie"
seems to produce an alpha rhythm conducive to daydreaming and reminiscence. The ever-popular Pachelbel Canon is elegant and majestic. It is here performed soothingly by Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields in a memorable rendition.
