ECCARD Missa Mon coeur se recommende à vous . Choral works Maria Jürgensen, cond; N German CCh MDG 902 1694-6 (SACD: 57:09 Text and Translation)

Johannes Eccard (1553–1611) figures in my record collection with mostly Read more single items on 15 discs dating back some decades, but this is the first full disc of his music to come my way. Born a Protestant in Mühlhausen, he spent eight years in two Catholic positions, at the Munich court (where Lassus was his teacher) and with the Fuggers in Augsburg. He decided that to improve his position and still remain Protestant, he had to find an agreeable employer. He went to Königsberg, then the seat of the duchy of Prussia, finally spending his last three years as Kapellmeister in Berlin. His only surviving Mass dates from the end of the Fugger period, while the 15 short works to German texts (only one is as much as four minutes long) that fill out this program belong to the Prussian period, many of them published posthumously by his pupil and successor, Johannes Stobaeus.

Eccard never really faded from sight, staying alive in Lutheran hymnals, but he can hardly be called a major composer. The evidence of this disc, however, will support anyone who wants to refresh his image. The Mass fits the pattern of its time with just enough originality to avoid being derivative. The motets and cantica for the church year are lively and expressive. This chamber choir was formed in 2005, and this is its first recording. It bodes well for the future, for Maria Jürgensen is capable of memorable recordings, so you might want to hear this promising beginning.
