'Requiem for my friend' is sung in Latin, Polish, and Greek.
Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski rose to international fame with a series of color-titled films, "Blue," "White" and "Red," and along with those films came the music of Zbigniew Preisner. The two had planned to collaborate on a theater piece about the cycle of life, but Kieslowski died in 1996 before the project came to fruition. In 'Requiem for my friend' Preisner places the movements of the Requiem Mass in the first section of a two part structure. The second part, apparently relating to the proposed theater piece, is called "Life" and uses a series of Biblical and liturgical texts sung in Greek, Latin and Polish.
Preisner's music is very much in the sphere of Eastern European minimalism that includes composers such as Henryk Górecki and Arvo Pärt, with slow moving lines, simple textures and melodies and a neo-medieval feeling. This recording featuring the Sinfonia Varsovia was recorded in Warsaw Cathedral, which provides a deep, reverberent acoustic.
