| If you've been looking for relaxing music that's equally suited to listening and to accompanying social conversation, consider this disc. The pairing of the oboe and harp facilitates the creation of a refined atmosphere. The two instruments complement each other and create an exquisite balance: whereas greater smoothness or legato in the harp, which like the acoustic guitar has a rapid decay in its tone, is achieved when it has multiple rapid articulations, in the oboe the opposite is the case. Its great lyrical quality, often compared to that of the human voice, arises from its capacity for seemingly endless tonal sustain, limited only by the player's breath control. The title work of the CD, a slow lyrical dance excerpted from a larger suite composed by the oboist Peter Cooper's father, Paul, embodies the mood of serenity that prevails throughout these arrangements for oboe and harp. | |||||
