Between 1770 and 1819, Brazil enjoyed a dazzling half-century in the arts, and especially in music. Our first 'view' of it here emerges frm Mina Gerais, then rapidly expanding. Around the 'Baroque' churches that multiplied in the region, stamped by the timeless genius of the architect 'Alejadhino', there grew up confraternities of freed black and mulatto slaves, for whom many Offices for Holy Week were written that reflected the aesthetic of Italian and Porguguese composers. This is the period that is revealed by the present boxed set, in the context of 'Brazilian year in France'.
