Notes and Editorial Reviews

Exploiting the full array of Renaissance instruments and vocal techniques, the Convivium Musicum Gothenburgense gives vibrant voice to the famous printed music compilations of the pioneering 16th-century Flemish music publisher (and sometime composer and arranger) Tielman Susato. Susato's first two music books (published in 1551) comprise, as the title page announces, "amorous songs in our Netherlandish, composed by divers composers, very pleasing to sing and play on all musical instruments." The members of the Convivium Musicum convey this sense of enjoyment, whether in a tender and melancholic song from one of Susato's first two books (as in the lovely performance of Benedictus Appenzeller's "Een venusdierken heb ick uutvercoren"), or in Read more one of the many jaunty dances from Susato's third and even more famous music book, containing 59 four-part dance movements.
REVIEWS:
International Record Review (5/00, p.95) - "...the singing has a delightfully ingenuous quality that matches perfectly the rustic and slightly wistful nature of most of the texts, and is accompanied with great sensitivity by lute, viols and various soft wind instruments..."
