"Ralph Hultgren...appears at the beginning of [From All Sides] with his highly effective Whirr! Whirr! Whirr! (1999), the silly name disguising a highly effective symphonic scherzo. Luis Nani’s 15-minute Lost Forest (2009) justifies George’s eagerness to promote the piece: It manages to roll together symphonic poem, South American dances, and Minimalist essay at the outset morphing into symphonic march; in its use of indigenous melodies and instruments, it also invokes the primitivist tradition of Chávez and Revueltas—and it also manages to be a voluble protest against the desecration of nature. Scenes from Childhood (2008) by Kit Turnbull is a good-natured suite of London-inspired miniatures—Eric Coates revisited, if you Read more like—with another whipcrack scherzo in its midst. And finally, Chen Qian’s Ambush! From All Sides (2009) offers a quarter-hour dramatic discourse, charting narratives and battles from China’s ancient past—and using the percussion more imaginatively than most of the other composers here.

The performances are sure-footed and committed, with plenty of rhythmic drive; the recordings are full-bodied; and the booklet notes offer commentaries from the composers followed by a brief biographical sketch for each of them."
