In his time Ludvig Hegner was a great Danish bass virtuoso and has influenced generations of Danish bass players. He began his career playing double bass in the Tivoli Orchestra and then in 1884 became a member of the Royal Theater Orchestra. Two months later, its conductor, Johan Svendsen appointed him principal bass. In addition to being an orchestral musician, he had a distinguished career as a soloist. With his eminent technique and dazzling musicality, he quickly became known as a virtuoso on the instrument. Following an appearance in New York City, he was compared by The New York Times to the great bassists of the day Dragonetti and Bottesini. Their father was the cathedral organist in Brno. For years he played the cello in the Royal Theater Orchestra and he organized a series of chamber concerts featuring the orchestra's musicians which carries on until this day.
