Notes and Editorial Reviews

DE VOCHT XIV Cantica. Duo Cantus Mariani. Larghetto for Organ. Missa in honorem Angelorum Ludo Claesen, cond; Cappella Concinite; Luk Bastiaens (org) PHAEDRA 92076 (59:56 & Latin only)

I daresay that the music of Lodewijk de Vocht (1887-1977) is unfamiliar to most readers of this magazine. The notes for this disc, which is titled Memorare, indicate that he became a chorister in the Antwerp Read more Cathedral Choir at age 10, had his first music lessons from Emile Wambach and Karel Weymans, entered the orchestra class of the Antwerp Royal Flemish Conservatory at age 12, and later went on to become a teacher at this conservatory and eventually its director. As violinist in the Royal Society of New Concerts Orchestra, de Vocht played under such conductors as Mahler, Strauss, Richter, Walter, and Weingartner. He began composing at the age of 14.

The XIV Cantica, according to the notes, cannot be firmly dated because it is a composite collection of which the various pieces may have been written over a number of years. To my ears, it is pleasant, calm, pretty-sounding, and resolutely tonal church music, nothing that would grab your attention whether or not you heard it as background music to a church service. It is, however, exceptionally well performed by the superb choral group Cappella Concinite with nicely understated organ accompaniment by Luk Bastiaens. The best one can say of this music is that it does indeed create a form of aural balm for the listener; it is particularly relaxing in a way that goes beyond its use of relaxed tempos and conventional choral writing. Occasionally one hears a nice modulation in the harmony, otherwise one rides the wave of romantic church music. (An indication of the kind of music it is: Very often specific words are not used, but merely one syllable—generally on an “ee” or “oo” vowel—which the choral voices then weave around.) It’s not bad music, but neither is it particularly great music. It is very fine music for its specific use, however. If this is a genre you particularly admire, you will not be disappointed by this disc’s sonics and ambience, which are flawless.
