Here is a fascinating glimpse at the music of two members of the Creole music scene that flourished in 19th century New Orleans, Paris and Rio de Janeiro, and whose best known exponent was Louis-Moreau Gottschalk. Charles Lucien Lambert was born into a musical New Orleans family (both his teacher-father Charles Richard and his half-brother Sidney were composers), and moved his family to Rio in the 1860s. He in turn taught his son Lucien Jr., who went on to Paris to study with Jules Massenet and thereafter had a successful career in Europe.
The piano works of Lucien Sr. could be described as salon pieces, pretty and technically flashy, incorporating American and Brazilian themes into a courtly virtuoso fabric. The music of Lucien Jr. is
