The recording of 'Sensemayá' on this album was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for "Best Orchestral Performance."
Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas possessed an astonishingly original voice. Born in 1899, he did not begin composing in earnest until around 1930, producing a stream of works remarkable for their dynamism, rhythmic abandon, skillful use of polytonality and vivid, though non-quotational, Mexicanism. His brief life was controversial; he was a revolutionary in both music and politics. He died in 1940 of acute alcoholism and has remained among the most lamentably neglected of composers.
SENSEMAYA contains some of Revueltas' best music. The title track, his most famous piece, is a short, wild tone poem inspired by a

'La Noche de los Mayas,' a four-movement suite of music written for a film, is a fantastic and colorful evocation of Mayan culture, magic and jungle nights that has the narrative coherence of a symphony. Equally absorbing is the chamber work 'Homenaje a Federico Garcia Lorca' which alternates meditative passages with maniacal, almost futurist sounding dances.
