Lionel Nowak began composing music around the age of nine, though he first received national attention after becoming Music Director of the Humphrey-Weidman Dance Company. His tenure there lasted from 1936 to 1942. After that, many of his compositions, consisting of songs and various chamber pieces were written for his colleagues at Bennington College, where he served on the faculty from 1948 to 1993.
