The first of these 17 mainly quietly melodic songs, Tosti's La serenata, no doubt inspired the album's title and it does indeed properly describe the restful tone of most of the items. Everything is sensitively and tunefully sung and the accompaniments are a model of excellence. A one-hour programme of gentle encores (521 minutes in fact) has a cumulatively soporific effect if listened to nonstop, but singly or in small groups they are captivating. Clean recorded sound in a welcoming open acoustic (piano off-centre) and the intimate style of performance combine to provide a fine example of CD's ability to make us believe that the music is being performed afresh for our special delight.
