Gene Gutchë was born in Berlin and as a youth was praised by composer Ferruccio Busoni. Gutchë moved to the U.S. in 1925 and settled in Minnesota, where he continued his musical studies, and attended rehearsals of the Minneapolis Symphony led by Dimitri Mitropoulos and Antal Dorati.
Gutchë's orchestral music is the focus of this recording. Gutchë's 'Icarus,' a large-scale suite, is atmospheric and brilliantly orchestrated. More concise in expression is the composer's energetic Symphony No. 5 for Strings. The work is memorable for its technical precision and exuberant final movement. Wit and warmth are cornerstones of Gutchë's style, and no better example of this is his 'Bongo Divertimento.' Percussion soloist Marvin Dahlgreen exhibits
