Biography by All Music Guide
Leo Arnaud was a composer and conductor who was highly active in the Hollywood film industry from the late 1930s to the mid 1960s, but who is now best remembered as the composer of Bugler's Dream--the ubiquitous brass fanfare featured on televised broadcasts of the Olympic Games. Born in Lyon, France, in 1904 (as Noël Arnaud), he studied composition with such estimable figures as Maurice Ravel and Vincent d'Indy before emigrating to the United States. He immediately began a career as a film composer, providing scores and orchestrations for a number of unmemorable films (Ever heard of Blondie goes Latin?); he also assumed the directorship of the Hollywood String Orchestra. Arnaud made interesting contributions to a number of significant Hollywood projects, including composing additional material for the film adaptation of Meredith Willson's The Unsinkable Molly Brown and acting as musical director/conductor for the orchestral score of One Touch of Venus, starring Ava Gardner. His compositions for the concert hall include Symphonie française, In Memoriam, Latin American Scenario, and Well Tempered Oboist.
