Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is some of the best classical saxophone playing I have heard anywhere. The whole range of tones and colors outside the jazz tradition is explored. Hearing just Boxsteps for Two should inspire any composer to incorporate some serious sax lines in the next orchestral work, or to write a proper sonata.

Lee’s piano accompaniments are highly sympathetic, and ultra responsive, but she also contributes some promising music of her own. The Sonatina for soprano sax is the better of the two works, melodic and distinctive. Womack’s pieces give Yukumoto plenty of opportunities to show off the power and subtle range of his playing, but 3D ends as yet another Rite of Spring imitation. I hope someone codifies the thousands of ripoffs of

Yasui’s Dances takes both players to more-interesting heights. I don’t know if there is anything specifically Hawaiian to be heard there or elsewhere, but the best of this music and the magnificent sax-playing suggest that music is thriving in the state. The cool beauty and varied timbres heard at the disc’s opening should sway anyone not normally attracted by this kind of repertoire.

This CD opens a window onto an expressive world of great beauty and charm, and the disc is highly recommended.
