Falling proudly in the tradition of eccentric American composers that stretches back past Charles Ives, Henry Brant has spent his career experimenting with spatial organization, unusual combinations of timbre, and juxtapositions of different musical styles. Each of his works is one-of-a-kind, and is often linked closely to a particular location. Such site-specific works, carefully plotting the listener's relation to sounds that often come from all sides, cannot translate perfectly to the medium of recording (separating your speakers as far as possible is recommended!), so a leap of imagination is necessary to experience the works reissued here.
'Orbits,' recorded at its 1979 premiere, is scored for 80 trombones--deployed both in massive Read more unisons and complex counterpoint--organ and wordless soprano. Brant finds timbral variety within the trombone family and juxtaposes the sustained tones of these instruments with grotesque organ punctuations. In 'Hieroglyphics 3,' a solo viola takes the foreground--actually playing from several locations in the hall--alternating lyrical and more explosive music against an improvising organ and other accompaniments in independent tempi. The longest and most recent work here, 'Western Springs' from 1984, adds two jazz combos and choruses with a text about geysers and the western landscape. This disc is an important document of a unique composer.
