After studying composition and piano at the RAM in London and receiving piano lessons from Frumerie in Sweden, Boldemann was forced to join the German Army in 1942. He served in Russia, Poland and Italy before deserting to join the Abruzzi. He spent two years in an American prison camp. He returned to Sweden in 1947 and began supporting himself as a timber measurer and later as a music teacher and administrator.
