Notes and Editorial Reviews

Andrew Ford was born in Liverpool, England and educated at the University of Lancaster. At 21, he was appointed Fellow in Music at the University of Bradford, a post he occupied between 1978 and 1982. In 1983, he came to Australia, and from 1983 to 1995 was on the Faculty of Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong. In 1993 and 1994, he was the Australian Chamber Orchestra's composer-in-residence. From 1998 to 2000, he was Peggy Glanville-Hicks Fellow in Composition. Ford has composed a considerable amount of vocal music, much of it for the veteran tenor Gerald English. Beyond composing, he is well known as a commentator on a wide range of music. Since 1990, he has reviewed new CDs for 24 Hours and he presents The Music Show each Read more Saturday morning on Radio National. In 1993, he wrote his book Composer to composer: conversations about contemporary music. The BBC Music Magazine described it as "a better introduction to contemporary music for the general reader than any textbook." 735885213725 Walking Frog WFR 320 VARIOUS Great Classical Music for Winds The Washington Winds $10.55 CD Classical "Much has been written and said about the repertoire of the concert band; of course, such unfurlings are usually preceded by attempts to establish more basic matters, like "when was the concert band invented?" or even "what is a concert band?" While the answers to these questions are not clear cut, it is a fact that musical ensembles containing wind and percussion players perform music worldwide from varied origins, including music originally composed for other mediums. Varying opinions and criticisms notwithstanding, on this recording you will hear fifteen time-honored musical "classics", absolutely none of which were composed for the concert band as is presented on this disc. The Washington Winds, comprised of many of the finest professional wind and percussion artists in music today, excel musically as these magnificent works come to life. From the lighthearted Strauss polkas to the terrifying Ride of the Valkyries," this recording combines great music with great players and a terrific conductor to offer you an exhilarating listening experience.
