Levantine flavored guitar September 7, 2014 By Oscar O. Veterano See All My Reviews "Eva Fampas “Greek Guitar Music” NAXOS Andre Segovia’s success as an advocate for the classical guitar is well documented; he inspired an entire generation of new players and, in places where the instrument was already known, he sparked a renewed interest among musicians and composers alike. As the effect of his efforts in places where the guitar was not a native instrument is less well known, “Greek Guitar Music” by Eva Fampas can serve as a wonderful documentary introduction to the rarely heard works of 2 generations of Greek “school” guitarist/composers. Ms. Fampas, daughter of legendary musician/composer/arranger/teacher Dimitris Fampas, is herself a genuinely gifted player with a flawless technique and a complete control of the dynamic range of her instrument. Whether performing the older generation’s more conservative compositions (in the case of her father directly influenced by his experience as Segovia’s student) or the more modern works of her contemporaries, she evidences both a total mastery of the guitar and a deep understanding of each individual composer’s approach. This is beautiful music expertly recorded and lovingly performed by a virtuoso who deserves to be much better known. “Greek Guitar Music” by Eva Fampas is highly recommended to both the general listener and specialist. The liner notes’ claim that in the 1950’s Greek guitar music “was in its heyday” should be taken with a grain of salt; the majority of the composers presented here were born during or after that decade and some of the most interesting compositions here are world premiere recordings. It is just possible that the best is yet to come. Highest possible recommendation 10 out of 10 Oscar O. Veterano" Report Abuse
