Notes and Editorial Reviews
Hans Zender was born in Wiesbaden. He studied at the Frankfurt and Freiburg conservatory. After graduating in piano, conducting and composition, he gathered his first theatrical experience as a conductor in Freiburg. After filling several leading positions in Bonn, Kiel and with the Saarland Broadcasting Corporation, he worked as musical director at Hamburg as well as at the Hamburg State Opera from 1984 to 1987. Since 1988, he has been professor of composition at the State Academy for Music and Interpretative Arts in Frankfurt/Main. Jorn Peter Hiekel writes: "The downright insistent bent on exploring means and ways is characteristic of Hans Zender's compositions, making way for a reflection and systematic extension of the traditional

figuration of form. In doing so, Zender's work is guided by different creative ideas. Work groups can be made out, each of which are dedicated to comparable issues or structural themes - and various such thematic strands within one piece may interrelate. By way of example, let me mention two work groups from this CD: on the one hand, the scores associated with Far-Eastern thought, which the composer himself occasionally calls his "Japanese" pieces; and on the other hand, the pieces composed since the late nineties, in which the composer fans out the microtones of sound space in a perfectly original manner. Muji No. Kyo and Furin No Kyo represent the first tendency, Music to hear and parts of Litanei the latter."
