Excellent music making at modest price December 2, 2016 By K. BAKER (HEBER CITY, UT) See All My Reviews "May be a great Xmas gift for any level of classical listener. Connoisseurs will enjoy the chance to explore the collected works of one of the lesser known great 20th C conductors. For those of use old enough to recall what DGG's Lps were like back in the day, these digital transfers are a revelation-- DGG had superb recording ability in the 1950s but a poor ability to transfer their recordings to the Lp. These CDs bring the excellent original recordings to life, many for the first time. While not up to the standards of today's best recordings, these 60 year old recordings sound pretty good. The set includes excellent performances of the full Beethoven (about half in mono), Bruckner, and Haydn London Symphonies. EJ's Beethoven is as fresh and pleasing as anything on the market today. EJ's two complete Bruckner sets (one on DGG, one on EMI) are legendary and still in the catalog. The included 1949 Bruckner 8th is, as the Penguin guide noted 50 years after its release, unsurpassed, being only surpassed today by Barenboim/BPO. The best complete set of Haydn's London Symphonies ever recorded, surpassed only by Woldike's partial set. For the novice classical listener: a good introduction to many of the standard works. Don't worry if you have some other recordings of some of these works for then you get to hear how much the conductor can influence how things sound. For the intermediate listener, put all the above together. You will enjoy. Quite a few mono recordings, but who cares when its this good?" Report Abuse
