Soprano Ruth Ann Swenson has won critical acclaim on operatic stages in both the United States and Europe. Swenson's operatic career was launched in 1983 at the San Francisco opera with her portrayal of Despina in Mozart's 'Cosi Fan Tutte.' Since then, she has become one of the most sought after coloratura sopranos on the operatic scene. This new recording presents Swenson in a collection of Italian opera arias. CON AMORE offers a wide range of music from the bel canto fireworks of Bellini's 'La Sonnambula' to the verismo passion of Puccini's 'Manon Lescaut.' Swenson's agile soprano voice floats through the coloratura line of the famous "Sempre libera" from Verdi's 'La Traviata.' In something of a departure from her usual repertoire, Swenson is featured in four arias by Puccini. She brings great pathos to "Mi chiamano Mimi" from Puccini's 'La Bohème' and heart wrenching drama to "In quelle trine morbide" from 'Manon Lescaut.' This is an exciting recital recording that showcases an exciting young singer in some of opera's most beloved arias. REVIEWS: Opera News (4/00, pp.87-88) - "...[Swenson's] attractive, shimmering voice is perfectly even from top to bottom, her trills and staccati are true... Her embellishments are tasteful and perfectly appropriate to both her voice and the aria being sung. The vocalizing is always lovely..." |
