Notes and Editorial Reviews

This musical tour of the western hemisphere is illuminated by the TransAtlantic Ensemble and filled with visceral dance rhythms which spring to life with every touch of a key. The TransAtlantic Ensemble is pianist Evelyn Ulex and clarinetist Mariam Adam. The duo is known for their innovative repertoire, engaging stage presence, and dynamic sound. The duo, which hails from Berlin and New York, has been making music together since 2005.

"The two Villa-Lobos miniatures are both delicious, and rarely heard. Noteworthy as well is the sound, recorded at the ambitiously named Traumton Studios in Berlin. An interesting elaboration on the crossover tendencies that have always been present in Latin American music." --

"Havana Moon is an innovative listening experience that has been cultivated for enthusiasts of new classical music tinged with Latin and jazz traditions." -- Classical.net

“Transatlantic Ensemble is redefining classical music, making it accessible and relevant to our times.” -- Feast of Music

"Fusing classical and Latin jazz in a most classical way, this piano/clarinet duo with some of their pals added for color find that sweet spot where jazz and classical collide in a most sprightly fashion without losing any seriousness along the way." -- MidWest Record

"Havana Moon mixes a couple of short, evocative, authentically Latinate piano works by Heitor Villa-Lobos with Latin-influenced pieces by three contemporary composers...Several of the pieces are world première recordings, and all are quite well handled by performers who are clearly comfortable playing “fusion” music whose Latin traditions blend with a mellow jazz sound and pleasantly rhythmic dancelike melodies." -- InfoDad

"Clarinettist Mariam Adam steps out with pianist Evelyn Ulex in their guise as the TransAtlantic Ensemble for a splendid voyage of discovery through the western hemisphere. The coolly virtuoso performances, lit by flashes of passion, reflect the musicians' close identification with the composers."

-- Gramophone [11/2016]
