R. MALIPIERO 14 Variazione di un tema musicale. Piccola musica. Invenzioni per pianoforte. Costellazioni. Le rondini di Alessandro. Diario secondo José Raúl López (pn) TOCCATA 0129 (55:48)

Riccardo Malipiero (1914-2003), nephew of Gian Francesco Malipiero, was an important figure on the postwar European musical front, and organized the first Congress of 12-Tone Music in Milan in 1945, an event attended by, among others, Bruno Maderna, Luigi Dallapiccola, Karl Amadeus Hartmann, Read more René Leibowitz, and John Cage. Although he adopted dodecaphonic methodology, perhaps as a symbolic break with the tradition of Italian music that was identified with the fascist government during World War II, he devised ways of manipulating the systems to his own service, and if the music on this disc is any indication, there is an innate lyricism and regard for familiar forms that gives his music a distinct character. It’s unfortunate that almost none of Malipiero’s music is currently available on disc—he composed three operas, three symphonies, four piano concertos, two violin concertos, two cello concertos, and one triple concerto, plus chamber and vocal music. However, we now have this release to provide insight into his piano music, and, believe it or not, there are performances of his Musica da Camera (1959) for wind quintet and String Quartet No. 2 (1954) on YouTube.

Surprisingly, as it was his primary instrument, Malipiero wrote little for solo piano, and with the exception of the Diario Secondo (1985), a 12-minute pseudo-sonata in three movements, each work in this “Complete Music for Solo Piano” consists of extremely brief sections or individual pieces lasting from 10 seconds to two minutes. But, despite their expansively chromatic or atonal impetus, these are not constructions of Webern-like concision. Instead, from the earliest work, the 14 Variazione of 1938, to the late period Diario Secondo , there is a consistency of style that reflects, but not mimics, baroque qualities—linear momentum, transparent textures, counterpoint, crisp rhythmic accents—and occasionally sounds reminiscent of Hindemith’s piano music. Two works, the Invenzioni (1949) and Le rondini di Alessandro (1971), were composed for students as examples of 12-tone and neoclassical compositional methods, and are attractive, spirited, simplified miniatures. Here, and in the remaining works, the variety of strategies offers unpredictable shapes, patterns, and rhythms—fluid, pointed, scurrying, placid, buoyant—that often give the effect of shifting perspectives on a single object. Twentieth-century aficionados should get to know Riccardo Malipiero, and hopefully we will have the opportunity to hear more of his music in the near future.
