Ballets made for television are not an everyday event, so the release of this 1989 Swedish production is a welcome addition to the catalog. Adapting a novel by Swedish Nobel Prize-winner Selma Lagerlöf (based on her own experiences) could not have been easy, and without reading the synopsis before viewing, one might occasionally wonder what was happening. I suspect (hope) that Swedish viewers 20 years ago were not faced with this problem. Gunnar is sidetracked by the distractions of the world while the family estate suffers reverses. He becomes a livestock trader but loses all his sheep (live for TV ) in a blizzard. He had wanted to run off with some traveling actors but is prevented. And the story only becomes more complicated. Many of the narrative elements were filmed in the studio with atmospheric backdrops and decors by Bo-Ruben Hedwall, while pure dance aspects seemed to have been filmed on a stage. Pär Isberg’s choreography, classical in inspiration, is a few steps above serviceable, but the dancers’ faces take naturally to close examination by the camera. Jan Sandström’s score is reminiscent of the great Hollywood composers of the 1940s and 1950s, closely wedded to the action, with mounting tension up to the final dissolve on the lovers’ kiss. In addition to Johanna Björnson and Martin Leander in the main roles, one must single out one of the Swedish stars of an earlier generation, Gerd Andersson, whose solo reflects the intensity of her feelings. Recommended, but I strongly suggest reading the accompanying synopsis.
