Notes and Editorial Reviews
"The tenor and his songs" is a phrase frequently used to indicate a certain repertoire of "pot-boilers" and "lollipops"; songs which, although mostly of no outstanding musical quality, enjoy great popularity with both singers and the public. On record, it is without doubt the tenors who dominate in this lightweight musical genre. One only has to look at Enrico Caruso's discography to understand how important a place popular songs held in the great tenor's repertoire. The compilation on this CD should recall, however, that other voice ranges too dedicated themselves to this somewhat scorned genre. On this CD it is the baritones and basses that take over the leading role which usually has fallen to the spoiled tenors.
