Notes and Editorial Reviews

Released originally in 1966, this now-historic collection of unusual patriotic band music from the venerable Goldman Band is deserving of classic status. Though it is cheeky of any band other than the Marines to call itself the "Greatest Band in the Land," the Goldman Band, founded in 1911, doesn't make the claim without justification, as it was and is the last surviving, authentic old-time professional band from a time in America when the Sousa, Creatore, Pryor, and other bands flourished across the country.

Founded by Edwin Franko Goldman, and expertly conducted on this disc by his son Richard, the Goldman Band was in 1966 a crackerjack ensemble, and though this collection runs only 43 minutes, it's full of
Read more fascinating material by composers like James Hewitt (a long Battle of Trenton suite), Alexander Reinagle, Stephen Foster (has anyone heard Santa Ana s Retreat from Buena Vista before?) and others, including Sousa of course.

This is a real slice of Americana, and band enthusiasts should hasten to acquire this superb digital transfer of a delightful collection.
